Interview with Daniel Bartolomé

is a young photographer based in Barcelona, I received his letter earlier this month. Daniel sent his beautiful photo to me, amazing pictures, clean light, simple scene, I love his style, so I invited him to do an interview here.

Well, first of all plesse tell us a little about yourself.

I have had a direct relationship with image making for the last 10 years. I spent four of those studying photography in the UK, then I assisted mainly fashion photographers in Barcelona and I am starting to work as a photographer in Spain.

What made you choose photography?

I guess I’ve always felt attracted by photographs since a very early age. I used to spend loads of time checking pictures, cutting them out of any magazines or newspaper I could get my hands on and collecting them when I was very young.

Do you remember which photo shoot you enjoyed most?

I could not say which photo shoot I enjoyed the most, I’d say that what I really enjoy is the very short period of time when I see an image in my head, even before I make it happen. I get a real rush out of that.

Most people think that, in an artist’s life, childhood is the most important part, can you tell us about your childhood?

My childhood was pretty normal, a lot of football playing…I grew up a small town in inland Spain and it got boring as I was turning into a teenager. This situation made me want to leave for a more interesting place, so I moved to London when I was 19.

What is your childhood dream?

My chilhood dream was to become a striker for Real Madrid!!!

Is there any special experiences?

There is two things I remember very well: I used to believe that life in past was all in black and white on the basis of the old photographs and movies that I saw when i was young! Also I can vividly remeber being shocked by how lighting conditions would suddenly change when clouds blocked sunlight.

Which artist do you especially like and enjoy?

Many and from differentt art forms, definetly not only photographers; from William Henry Fox Talbot to Jeff Wall, from Helmut Newton to Tim Walker, but also Luis Buñuel, Stanley Kubrick, Autechre, John Coltrane, Goya, Francis Bacon….the list would be endless but I think music “plays” a very important role in my everyday life.

Creation is a process of transformation, converting the abstract ideas in mind, into something for you to see, to touch and to experience. It starts from nothing, through unceasing practice to realize them all. In your creative process, what is the most concerned about? aesthetics, style, artistry, feelling or others? Why?

With fashion photography I am mostly concerned about making sure that I am able to reproduce whats in my head. At this stage that involves a lot of problem solving, but not only in terms of arranging stuff or dealing with people but also the mental process and decision making needed to create an image.

Some people said that the most important thing in taking a good fashion photograph is to forget about shooting the model, how do you think of it?

I would not say that, there is not a system since it involves people and every human being is different. I think many different things need to be tuned in perfectly to create outstanding images, specially with fashion.

What are your biggest source of inspiration?

Light, light is everything. How It chages, the way we try control it, the visual effect that it has on matter, how people react to it…

Do you feel there is any kind of overriding “theme” behind your work? What is it?

I am making an concious effort to avoid that happening, although it would probably make things easier on a commercial level. I am not only shooting fashion, this allows me go into other directions in terms of style, subject matter….

What does photography mean to you?

Nowadays, the more I consider it as an occupation rather than the most important thing in my life the most I get out of it. I am making an effort to gain perspective in my everyday relationship to it.

What’s important in photography and imaging today?

I think is important to believe in the fact that not everything has been seen or photographed.

Do you think it’s important for the artists to tell something about the world with their works?

I think is more important to be able to be able REACH others with whatever you want to say, it is becoming more difficult because we are being bombarded with images constantly and we become numb to them , but I believeit is still possible.

You lived in UK and Spain, do you like to travel? which city you’ve traveled or lived impressed you most?

I do love to travel, I think the most impressive town I’ve been to is a place called Essaouira in southern Morocco. It is in the atlantic coast, the architecture and the atmosphere is just magic. It used to be part of the french empire so it has this colonial feel and the houses look like the ones in Tatooinne in Star Wars!!

Also is a surfing spot, and it is kind of surprising seeing the moroccian locals with dreadlocks on their hair and wearing surf gear.

What are you doing now? What is the next?

Improve the commercial aspects of my phototgraphy. An go on a well deserved holiday!!
