Shall Zou: I love your nature style, could you describe more about yourself?
Lisa Kimmell: I live in Northern California and there is no question that I am inspired by the beauty of my surroundings, sometimes the location of a picture is almost as important as the person I’m shooting. Give me a willing subject, vintage cloths and let me go for a drive, that’s heaven to me, I like to keep it as simple as I can, from make-up to lighting, naturalness and simplicity are key to my portraits.
I did my undergrad work at the Brooks Institute in Santa Bartara California and Grad work at the Academy of Art in San Franvisco. Currently I’m shooting stock for Getty Images, Jupiter Images and Plainpicture, and I also do some advertising photography.

Shall Zou: How do you start photography, are there any special experiences?
Lisa Kimmell: My interest in photography started when my father gave me his old Nikon, I was initially interested in photography as a photojournalist. I admired pictures that had some social importance, served a purpose, but I ended up going to a school that concentrated on the more commercial aspects of photography and lost that focus. It took me quiet awhile to find my “style” and I believe that really started to happen for me when I bought a Hasseblad, the world just made more sense square.

Shall Zou: In your creative process, what are you the most concerned about?
Lisa Kimmell: In terms of what concerns in me in regards to the creative process I’d have to say mediocrity more than anything else. I mean anything goes in the creative process, but in order for it to be successful for me it has to be intriguing on some level.
Shall Zou: What are your biggest sources of inspiration?
Lisa Kimmell: My biggest sources of inspiration are the elements, anyone that lets me photograph them, Natasha, anything gothic, vintage cloths and the planet at large. There is so much to see and the camera really gives me premission to look.

Shall Zou: What does photography mean to you?
Lisa Kimmell: Photography has given me a form of self expression in the arts, I think many photographers are frustrated painters. I know that’s true for me, I can’t paint so I create pictures another way.
Shall Zou: What’s the next?
Lisa Kimmell: In terms of how my photography is evolving I hope to get back to doing mote travel photography, I’m also working with encaustic, making my work more three dimendional.
