Interview with Oleg Dou

Cheburashka,

Shall Zou: Why is named toy story rather than kid story?

: Here in Russia (and I guess in many other countries) we have a tradition to make annual photo of all kids in kinder gardens (schools, institutes). You always can see a toy in a hands of this kids or near them (sometimes it’s a dog, sometimes it’s bear or maybe Pinocchio). Of course it differs but the thing is that toy is not personal for this kid – a photographer gives it saying:“Take it and smile” and takes it back after. This was very uncomfortable for me, I tried to smile – but some other emotions was their. I was afraid of photographer and this toy.

Shall Zou: What made you want to create these fantasy photos?

Oleg Dou: I think that all the work I do now is related to this photos – I still hate when somebody makes a photos of me, but with the same strong I adore to make photos of other people… And I always try to find something behind what we see on the picture.

Later I saw a lot of pictures with kids and toys with unhappy, strange or angry faces…

It looks like grownups plays with kids making them pretend to smile when they don’t want to, so the real toy in a picture is a kid. And the idea of this series came from here – I combined a toy and a kid in one face

Shall Zou: Could you describe your photo style? clean bizarre?

Oleg Dou: I always wanted to be different and recognized among others. I saw a lot of “trash” art when I was a child and still. I understand the idea to create art looking like no art – it is a kind of protest. But it is too much for me now, I’m tired to see such a things around, I don’t see any differenced among many artists. So I do another.

Mickey,

Shall Zou: For you, what’s the greatest attraction of photography?

Oleg Dou: My mother was a painter, now she works as a costumes designer for movies. My brother is musician. I spent a lot of time among artist when I was a child. And my childhood dream was to be an artist. So I’m lucky I am now.

Shall Zou: What made you choose photography?

Oleg Dou: I’m interested in combining several different tools as digital retouch and real photography. Photography is a main part of my work and most important – you can’t simulate emotions and light with computer. So I do my best to take a good picture also technically perfect. I make the retouch with a computer.
